University of Salford – Adelphi Building (‘Gateway Building’) (Value: £55m)

Full Principal Designer and CDM Advisor Services for the delivery of the New Adelphi Building – an Arts, Media and Performance Facility including a black box theatre, an external theatre, multi-media state of the art recording and practice studios, internal and external exhibition spaces, design studios, scenery and props workshops, dance studios, lecture theatres and teaching spaces.

The building is located in Chapman Square within the Peel Park Campus and includes the relocation of a joint-ownership HV substation, new ring-main and associated infrastructure diversions, demolition of two existing buildings, ground remediation and flood attenuation works, the provision of a new multi-storey Arts and Media Building to BREEAM excellent rating and Public Realm hard and soft landscaping with associated Campus lighting and infrastructure roadway alterations.

Added Value: 

  • Lead monthly review meetings with the University in respect of existing information and coordination of non-Masterplan construction Projects across Campus, together with ongoing analysis of the impact of the proposed construction works on adjacent University teaching and research operations
  • Developed Building Hazard Management documents for all existing structures to capture existing infrastructure hazards
  • Initiated a Campus-wide topographical, chemical and geophysical survey of the proposed site
  • Worked with the University Fire Officer and internal Health & Safety Officers to complete a Campus-wide traffic management analysis, which resulted in the production of a 5 year phased site logistics  strategy intended to co-ordinate and integrate, multiple Project construction traffic arrangements, with existing fire, emergency access and day-to-day University delivery and waste management plans

Influence on the Design Process:

–          Coordinated the safest reasonably practicable routes for the new HV mains installation across Peel Park Campus

–          Developed an access and off-loading strategy for the delivery of large construction elements (25m pre-cast concrete floor beams, 14m clear span cantilever Vierandeel steel girder)

–          Commented on piled foundation proposals (14m made ground)

–          Commented on impact of foundations in respect of noise, vibration and generation of dust

–          Advised on dust suppression techniques using water-atomising cannon

–          Commented on flood attenuation proposals arising from FRA of River Irwell

–          Commented on the cleaning strategy of large glazed atria proposals

–          Commented on the tree planting proposals in respect of facade cleaning and maintenance  access via MEWP

–          Commented on Public Realm out-door theatre design and raised planter bed layout in respect of emergency service vehicle access to other buildings fronting Chapman Square and potential trip hazards for partially-sighted students

–          Advised on the use of LED luminaires for external lighting to minimise maintenance requirements

–          Commented on wind-modelling and tree planting proposals around curtilage of new building
