OPERATIONAL PRIORITIES FOR HSE

Operational priorities for the HSE continue to include small sites / duty holders, asbestos licensing, refurbishment and major projects / large contractors. As before, new elements have been introduced and others will evolve, including:
a) Fragile roofwork where all work on commercial roofs, whether notified or seen whilst carrying out other work (including farms), will be inspected. CD will also aim to investigate all complaints received about work on commercial roofs. This initiative is also being supported by FOD general inspections;
b) Health risks involved with cutting activities (particularly roof tiles) and the use of dust suppression, on-tool extraction, hand-arm vibration and noise;
c) An inspection initiative targeted at trading and non-trading retail stores where asbestos is being removed.
d) Visiting officers writing to known installers, suppliers, manufacturers and designers of fireplaces enclosing the Stone Federation of GB guidance on safe installation. This follows several instances of heavy stone components forming part of modern fireplace surrounds falling causing damage or injury, and in separate incidents the tragic deaths of two young children.
