Manchester Enterprise Academy Central

Manchester Enterprise Academy (MEA) Central opened in September 2017, having commenced construction in November 2016. The modern new school, which accommodates approximately 1,050 boys and girls ages 11-16 in the areas of Fallowfield, Levenshulme, Burnage and Withington, was a £27m construction project as part of the Education Basic Needs (EBN) programme; a government scheme to provide funding to local authorities in areas which require additional school places to meet population growth and demand.

The main building of the school on Lytham Road in Fallowfield is an impressive, bright, three-storey structure in an ultra-modern horseshoe shape with a spacious courtyard in the middle. Facilities within include a brand-new drama studio, a contemporary open-plan dining area and a large main hall which has sophisticated retractable seating to transform into a versatile space for a multitude of uses. In addition, there an impressive full-sized sports hall suitable for a wide range of sports.

Outdoors, MEA Central boasts multi-use, all-weather sports pitches with flood lighting which is available for the wider community to use during evenings and weekends.

The 85,000 sq ft development was constructed on what was disused playing fields, previously used by the University of Manchester.

Keelagher Okey Klein provided Principal Designer Advisor services on this project alongside Laing O’Rourke and Ellis Williams Architects (EWA) for Manchester City Council.
