Manchester Business School – Bridge Demolition and Associated Works
KOK provided CDM Consultant services on the demolition of Manchester Business School’s pedestrian bridge across Oxford Road. Works included undertaking a full structural and R&D Asbestos survey to the bridge structure and to all rooms/areas which form part of the services diversion route in the MBS Building (which includes Harold Hankin House, Crawford House and Precinct Centre), IT Building and Kilburn Building. A preliminary UXO (unexploded ordnance) risk assessment was necessary alongside the control of Aspergillus spore contamination. A service diversion route was formed with a new riser (where the heating pipework crossed Oxford Road) and a 2nd trench housed the ducting across the grassed area in front of Devonshire House. As the bridge crossed Oxford Road, temporary carriageway and footpath closures with traffic management plans were implemented with all the necessary permits and licenses for excavation. A cladding façade reinstatement was installed to the MBS building following the demolition. Despite the works being within a live University Campus and across a major arterial road to Manchester City centre, the primary bridge structure was removed at night to minimise disruption and improve safety.
